The Beni region in Nord-Kivu has reported its first confirmed case of monkeypox. This confirmed case was recorded in the Kyondo health zone in the Beni territory, under the provincial health division (DPS/Butembo).
This information was provided on Monday, September 9, 2024, by the chief medical officer of the Kyondo health zone. Dr. Kabongo Kapita Samuel confirmed that the case was verified by the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), which confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the health zone.
The health professional indicated that the confirmed case was infected in Kasindi before being detected in Kyavinyonge, by the lake. The positive result was confirmed after a test was sent to the INRB.
Dr. Kabongo Kapita Samuel also revealed that another case with similar symptoms is under investigation in his area. He is calling on healthcare professionals to intensify awareness efforts to break the transmission chain of this very dangerous disease. He also invites the public to actively participate in the fight against this illness.
