Dr. Denis Mukwege, the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is known for his compassion towards the less fortunate. His recent act of generosity towards the displaced individuals in the city of Beni is another demonstration of this.
On Sunday, July 29, 2023, following a sit-in by the displaced at the Beni city hall pleading for assistance from the government and its partners, the PANZI Foundation, led by Dr. Mukwege, stepped in to alleviate the burden of these struggling individuals. Their intervention took the form of distributing food and non-food items to help these displaced people navigate tough circumstances.
A Well-Received Intervention The distribution was launched by Senior Commissioner Jacob, the Mayor of Beni city, at the Beni Sport stadium, located in the residential commune of Bungulu. In a statement to the media, the Mayor commended Dr. Mukwege’s act of charity, noting that it met a pressing need in his jurisdiction.

He conveyed a message of hope to the displaced, assuring that the government, through its military, is working to restore peace in this troubled region of the country.
A Respite for Widows and Orphans The beneficiaries of this aid, largely widows and orphans of massacres perpetrated by the ADF-MTM, expressed their gratitude towards Dr. Mukwege for remembering them in these difficult times. The coordinator of the Denis Mukwege Foundation, Mr. Kanike, emphasized how valuable this aid is for those struggling to meet their basic needs such as food, housing, and even soap.
The aid provided by the PANZI Foundation comprised a food kit and a dignity kit specifically meant for women.
Dr. Mukwege’s initiative in Beni mirrors the one he led in Goma, where his foundation also lent assistance to those in need. These actions are not only a testament to Dr. Mukwege’s generosity but also a call to action for the government and other development actors to step in and help restore stability in these crisis-stricken regions.
Dr. Mukwege’s gesture is a reminder that every effort counts in the fight against adversity. Let’s all do our part to support those in need, following in the footsteps of exemplary figures like Dr. Denis Mukwege.
