Kinshasa: Godé Mpoy, the ‘Miyibi’ of the Republic, Retaliates with Vehemence

The President of the Kinshasa provincial assembly, Godé Mpoy, has launched a biting riposte against his detractors, labelling them as “Miyibi,” a Lingala term that means thief.

This explosive statement was made during his sermon on Sunday, July 30, in his church, following his reinstatement by the appeals court.

A Condemning Sermon

“Because of these thieves, people are dying in hospitals and civil servants are not getting paid,” denounced the President of the Kinshasa Provincial Assembly. During the sermon, he improvised a song with his followers, wondering who to preach to between thieves and the snake. The followers responded in chorus: “We preach to the thieves, leave the snake.”

Accusation Warfare

These statements come in the context of an open war between Godé Mpoy and his opponent, who accuses him of embezzling public funds. Godé Mpoy’s entourage, on the other hand, blamed the opposing camp for orchestrating his removal from the presidency of the Kinshasa Provincial Assembly. The opposing camp, in turn, labels Godé Mpoy as a false pastor.

Reactions from the Population

In the face of this situation, the population of Kinshasa is in shock. Residents are asking the head of state to personally intervene to resolve this conflict that not only tarnishes the image of the capital but also the sacred union of the nation, as both protagonists are members. This political saga has revealed deep divisions within the political elite of Kinshasa. As accusations and invectives fly, the population is desperately awaiting concrete solutions to their daily problems. It is clear that politics in Kinshasa, like in many other cities, is far from a game for the faint-hearted.
