Football: As Vita Club hit by FIFA, DCMP opposes new format of LINAFOOT

While the 2023-2024 sports season has not yet begun in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the two major clubs in Kinshasa, namely Association Sportive Vita Club and Daring Club Motema Pembe, are already making headlines.

Indeed, As Vita Club has been hit by a decision from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) prohibiting them from recruiting players during the upcoming transfer window. This comes as a result of a financial dispute with their former player, Ismaïla Diarra, over the $45,000 that the green and black club from Kinshasa owed the Malian player. Only $33,000 was paid to him, with the remaining $12,000 supposed to be paid since March 2023. However, V.Club failed to fulfill their obligations and has consequently been sanctioned by FIFA, which will be enforced during the next transfer window.

On the other hand, DCMP does not intend to start the national LINAFOOT championship on August 23 with the new format initiated by the Normalization Committee (CONOR) of the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA). The green and white club supports the Association of Football Clubs Directors of Congo (ADFCO) in demanding a championship with a format of 3 pools and 26 clubs, while CONOR has come up with a format of 2 pools with 10 clubs each.

“Following the imposition by CONOR of FECOFA to play the 2023-2024 edition of the national championship with 20 clubs, considering the refusal of the vast majority of companies who firmly insist on a championship with 3 pools and 26 clubs, DCMP reaffirms its trust in ADFCO,” reads an announcement made by the club, as published by sports journalist Jonathan Masiala of Top Congo FM.

Let us recall that ADFCO claims not to have been consulted by CONOR regarding the development of the new championship format, which is supposed to start on August 23.
