Amazon Summit in Brazil: DRC Among Guests in Belém

Starting this Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in the Brazilian city of Belém, is the summit gathering the Amazon countries. This summit is taking place with issues that transcend the region, in the hope of finding concrete solutions against global warming.

This summit, which brings together representatives from the eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), created in 1995 to protect the rainforest, will discuss common strategies to combat deforestation and promote sustainable development in this vast region that houses about 10% of the planet’s biodiversity.

Also participating in this summit as guests at the closing on Wednesday are Indonesia, France, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville, which host vast tropical forests on other continents, according to sources from TV5MONDE. Together, the participants will debate and establish strategies to fight against deforestation.

One of the main challenges during this event will also be to find a common action plan to eradicate illegal deforestation. The deforested lands are often turned into grazing land for livestock, but the destruction is also caused by gold miners and timber traffickers. At the end of this summit, a joint statement will be published to seal the commitments of the ACTO member countries.
