Nord-Kivu: Terrorists threaten Virunga National Park, Rutshuru Youth Council calls for action

The Territorial Youth Council of Rutshuru has recently issued a press release strongly condemning the invasion of Virunga National Park by the terrorists of M23-RDF-UPDF-AFC.

This statement, published on April 19, 2024, a copy of which was sent to the editorial office of Kilalopress, highlights a critical situation that threatens the fauna, flora, and the lives of the inhabitants of this part of the DRC.

The terrorists have given a 48-hour ultimatum to the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) to vacate the Rwindi base, located 55 km from the center of Rutshuru, in the central sector of Virunga National Park. The Virunga National Park, a World Heritage site, is threatened by this incursion, endangering the life and environment of the region. The Rutshuru Youth Council reminds that the law grants belligerent status to park rangers in the event of armed conflicts. They strongly condemn this invasion and demand the immediate withdrawal of the terrorists from Virunga National Park. Highlighting the disastrous consequences of this intrusion, the statement warns against the terrorists’ intent to destroy the ecosystem, plunder rare species, engage in ivory trade, and exploit minerals.

The Youth Council urgently calls on UNESCO and other organizations working in nature conservation to allow the ICCN to return to its Rwindi base and ensure the preservation of the fauna and flora. The preservation of this exceptional environment is deemed crucial and must not be compromised by terrorist acts.

This press release from the Rutshuru Youth Council emphasizes the duty to protect nature and defend resources for future generations. It calls for collective action to preserve Virunga National Park and prevent any threats to its survival. The current situation in Virunga National Park is alarming and requires an urgent response. The Rutshuru Youth Council calls for solidarity and action to safeguard this natural gem, essential for ecological balance and the lives of future generations.
