Maniema: Chinese company “Étoile d’Orient” makes billions of dollars in illegal mining

The province of Maniema in the Democratic Republic of Congo is currently grappling with a contentious issue surrounding illegal mining activities, particularly involving the Chinese company “Étoile d’Orient.” Benjamin Kawanga, a prominent figure from the Kailo territory, has vehemently criticized the company’s operations, accusing it of flouting the mining code and regulations in the DRC.

Kawanga has emphasized the lack of transparency and local benefits from the mining activities of the Chinese company, further alleging fraudulent attempts to obtain a social charter that does not meet the required standards set by the mining code and regulations in the DRC.

In response to these allegations, Kawanga has called upon provincial and national authorities to halt the illegal mining activities of “Étoile d’Orient” and to ensure the restitution of natural resources to the local population. He has specifically denounced the company’s attempt to involve a select group of village leaders and certain provincial and territorial authorities in signing a so-called social charter, questioning their legitimacy to do so.

The detrimental effects of this exploitation in the province include loss of tax revenues, environmental degradation, river and soil pollution, health risks for workers, and exploitation of local populations.

In light of these challenges, some residents believe that strengthening controls and inspections, imposing sanctions, and raising awareness among local populations are crucial steps towards promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices.

The situation in Maniema province underscores the urgent need for transparent and equitable mining practices, as well as the enforcement of regulations to safeguard the interests of local communities and the environment.
