Maniema : 8 Grey Parrots Found Dead in Clandestine Evacuation Attempt

Security authorities made a shocking discovery on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Kindu National Airport. Eight grey parrots, victims of a clandestine evacuation, were intercepted.

This sad news was revealed by Manda Sefu Moïse, acting provincial chief of the environment division, in a late statement to the press.

Manda Sefu Moïse expressed regret at the persistence of illicit trafficking despite the ban on the trade of this species due to its threat of extinction. The parrots, packed in a carton, were found lifeless, all asphyxiated. This discovery deeply affected Manda Sefu Moïse, highlighting that some colleagues in the airport services do not adhere to the current bans. He emphasized the importance for them to work in the interest of the state and to respect the decisions made to protect endangered wildlife.

The local active civil society recently denounced a 30-day moratorium granted by the acting governor, Afani Idrisa Mangala, to an association of grey parrot exploiters. This moratorium aimed to allow the evacuation of 400 specimens out of the province. However, this clandestine evacuation attempt highlights the persistent challenges related to wildlife protection and combating animal trafficking.

This macabre discovery raises serious concerns about the protection of endangered species. Despite the measures taken to ban the trade of grey parrots, illicit trafficking appears to continue, jeopardizing the survival of these magnificent birds. The loss of these eight grey parrots is a poignant reminder of the urgency to act to protect endangered wildlife.
