Flooding in Hombo: Several Households in Need of Rescue

Hombo, March 5, 2024 – Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have struck the agglomerations of Hombo South and North, located on the border between the territories of Kalehe (South Kivu) and Walikale (North Kivu), in the early afternoon of Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

These rains have caused the Hombo River to flood, inundating residential houses, school buildings, and riverside churches. Many families are left homeless and in very difficult living conditions.

This is the second flooding in the span of two months in this region. In January 2024, torrential rains had already caused enormous material damage. The victims of this first flooding are still awaiting humanitarian aid. Fortunately, no loss of life has been recorded during these recent floods. However, the material damage is significant, and the needs of the affected people are numerous.

Civil society is calling on the authorities to assist the flood victims, emphasizing that the living conditions of the population are deplorable and that urgent intervention is necessary. In addition to emergency humanitarian aid, it is important to implement sustainable measures to prevent further flooding in this region. This could include the construction of embankments, reforestation of riverbanks, and raising awareness among the population about flood risks.
