The territory of Banalia, located 128 km from the city of Kisangani, has been selected as a pilot territory for the implementation of a national REDD+ framework strategy and investment plan in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This initiative, adopted by the DRC in November 2012, aims to combat the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation by adopting an approach based on sustainable forest management methods that integrate the preservation and development of forest resources.
During a meeting led by the administrator of the Banalia territory, in the presence of various community representatives, the Director of Inventories, National Planning (DIAF), Mr. Maurice MATANDA, presented this new strategic direction of the government. He emphasized that this approach should contribute to the fight against climate change and the sustainable development of the DRC.

The Sustainable Forest Management Program (PDGF), for which the Banalia territory is prioritized, has been formulated as a forest sector program of the REDD+ investment plan. This program aims to improve forest governance through six thematic components, including good governance, a first national forest policy, formalization of artisanal forestry, better management of Congolese forests, sustainable forest management, legal logging concessions, and capacity building.
Before the meeting was concluded, territorial administrator Gilbert AKPAMBA installed the local implementation committee composed of twenty-three people, of which he is the president.
This initiative demonstrates the DRC’s commitment to preserving its forest resources and its willingness to combat deforestation while promoting sustainable development.
