In the province of Tshopo, foreign interests seem to take precedence over the well-being of inhabitants and the preservation of the environment. Kilalopress’s constant reporting from the field demonstrates that the showdown between profit-seeking exploiters and the struggle for environmental justice is escalating.
The case revealed by Honorable Senold Tandia Akomboyo sheds light on a bitter truth: the Chinese mining company Xiang Jiang Mining, under the guise of exploration, has turned the Arwimi River into a scene of plunder. The image of an imposing administrative building, flanked by robotic dredges, illustrates the extent of this ruthless exploitation enterprise, where each suction costs the province millions of dollars. A blatant absurdity!
The mining activities of the Xing Jiang Mining company in the Basoko territory (Tshopo) were suspended by the Ministry of Mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo. To materialize this decision, a delegation led by the provincial minister of mines was dispatched by the provincial governor to the site. On Tuesday, April 11, in Kisangani, sixteen Chinese employees and executives of this company were brought back, pending further arrangements.
However, this temporary suspension of the company in 2023 has been nothing but a pause in a symphony of deceit. Despite promises of rectification, reports indicate that clandestine activity continues, shamelessly eroding the region’s resources without restraint. The local population, powerless witnesses to this saga, rightly calls for firm intervention to end this unbearable deception.

Faced with this disastrous situation, a fundamental question arises: where are the safeguards of mining governance? Do the representatives of the people, especially parliamentarians, truly have the means to protect citizens’ rights and advocate for sustainable development? Honorable Senold Tandia Akomboyo’s call resonates as a rallying cry for action. It is time for the province of Tshopo to stand up against this creeping exploitation and erect strong barriers to defend its natural wealth. The establishment of Tshopo Mining is more imperative than ever, so that the population can enjoy the benefits of its own resources, in compliance with environmental standards and fundamental rights.
In these times where greed threatens ecological and social balance, the example of courage and determination set by Honorable Akomboyo must serve as inspiration to all defenders of environmental justice. Together, we can reverse the trend and build a future where sustainable development outweighs selfish and destructive interests.
