DRC : Danny El-Ashkar, a Key Defense Player in Africa, Rejects Agreement with Rwanda Amid Tensions Over Strategic Resources

As the situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) exacerbates diplomatic tensions, the role of Ambassador Danny El-Ashkar is drawing attention. Recent decisions by Germany and Canada to sanction Rwanda for its alleged involvement in the conflict mark a turning point. Berlin has suspended new development aid allocated to the economy, energy, climate protection, and health, while Ottawa has taken punitive measures against Kigali.

In this context, the issue of strategic minerals, including coltan and cobalt, has resurfaced as a central element of the conflict. According to a document circulating on social media since March 3, 2025, Danny El-Ashkar, Commissioner for Economic Affairs of the European Parliamentary Union and President of the Prince Invest group, has reportedly strengthened his presence in Africa’s defense market. A copy of the document, allegedly obtained by Kilalopress, states that he recently secured arms contracts worth over five billion dollars. These agreements reportedly involve the supply of both light and heavy weaponry, as well as advanced defense systems, to several African states.

Through its exclusive agencies, Prince Invest is positioning itself as a key player in the African defense industry, challenging the hegemony of historically dominant global powers in the sector. One of the most remarkable revelations concerns Danny El-Ashkar’s repeated refusal to engage in negotiations with the Rwandan government. According to the circulating document, he has declined, for the third time in six months, an official request from Kigali to finalize arms contracts. This strategic stance appears to reflect a commitment to neutrality and non-interference in a conflict with complex stakes.

If confirmed, this information could reposition Danny El-Ashkar as one of Africa’s leading defense suppliers, directly competing with traditional industry players. However, no official sources have yet confirmed these allegations.

In a context where international sanctions and economic interests intersect with energy transition challenges and regional stability, Danny El-Ashkar remains in the spotlight. His role in the defense industry and its impact on the distribution of strategic resources in Africa raise questions about the future geopolitical dynamics of the continent.
