Fight Against Polio: 1.5 Million Doses of Vaccine Already Available in 17 Health Zones of the Provincial Health Division (DPS) Butembo Branch

In the midst of the fight against polio, 1.5 million doses of the vaccine are already available in 17 health zones of the provincial health division (DPS) Butembo branch, in the North-Kivu province. This considerable stock will be used to vaccinate approximately 100,000 children aged 0 to 59 months, announced Bernardin Siviholya, head of the DPS Butembo branch.

The announcement was made on August 9, 2023, at the official launch of the polio vaccination campaign. According to Dr. Siviholya, the Congolese government is mobilizing to fight against this 22nd polio epidemic and completely eliminate this disease on the national territory.

Kasereka Kisokero, who contracted the disease at the age of 4, urged parents to massively vaccinate their children to protect them against this potentially deadly virus. “Living with a disability is not easy. I urge all parents to vaccinate their children to protect them against this disease.”

Since August 9, 2023, mobile vaccination teams have been going door to door to vaccinate children. The city’s mayor, who officially launched the vaccination campaign, also called on the population to warmly welcome the vaccination teams.
